Infrared coagulation (IRC) uses focused beams of infrared light to treat small to medium-sized hemorrhoids. The procedure creates heat that causes scar tissue to form, cutting off the hemorrhoid's blood supply. Once the hemorrhoid tissue dies off, the scar tissue forms a barrier to hold localized veins in place and prevent them from protruding into the anal canal and forming new hemorrhoids. For patients with multiple hemorrhoids, treatment is performed on one hemorrhoid at a time, with other hemorrhoids being treated at two-week intervals.
Hemorrhoids occur when the blood vessels that supply the anus become swollen and inflamed, protruding into the anus where they cause itching, pain and mild bleeding. Hemorrhoids often occur as a result of chronic straining during bowel movements or frequent constipation that results form a diet low in fiber. They may also occur following a period of extreme weight gain, during pregnancy or as a result of long periods of standing or sitting, and they occur more frequently over age 50.
IRC is done right in the doctor's office. The procedure may cause sensations of heat and some discomfort as the hemorrhoids are being treated. Once the procedure is completed, you may feel the urge to have a bowel movement or a feeling of fullness in your lower intestine. About a week to 10 days after the procedure, the hemorrhoid will fall off and you will experience some slight bleeding from your anus. Dr. Lai may also recommend you take stool softeners to help avoid straining during bowel movements and prevent hard stools in the future.
